History: When Yankees rookie Mickey Mantle (#20) was sent down to Kansas City after a disappointing start, he considered giving up and quitting baseball. His father told him that if he was going to be a quitter, he would drive him home to Oklahoma right then and there. The tough love worked, and Mantle soon turned it around.

Like other Negro League ballclubs, the Clowns were struggling after the 1947 signings of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby to Major League clubs opened the door for all of the best black ballplayers to leave the Negro Leagues for better opportunities in the big leagues.
